CFP:ozchi 2012

OzCHI is Australia’s leading forum for work in all areas of Computer-Human Interaction. It attracts an international community of practitioners, researchers, academics and students from a wide range of disciplines including user experience designers, information architects, software engineers, human factors experts, information systems analysts, social scientists and managers. The conference also welcomes perspectives from design, architecture, engineering, planning, social science and creative industries among other disciplines. OzCHI 2012 is being held In cooperation with the ACM and accepted long and short papers will be included in the ACM Digital Library.

The conference will be held in the Advanced Technologies Centre at the Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn campus. Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th November are devoted to workshops, tutorials and a doctoral consortium. Wednesday 28th November to Friday 30th November will contain the main body of the conference The conference theme, Innovation, Immersion, Integration, Inclusion and Interaction. The theme reflects both the global nature of HCI and the diversity of cultures within which people incorporate interactive use of computers in their daily lives. It also reflects how HCI practitioners and researchers conduct their research and build their applications. *Submissions All submissions must use the two column OzCHI proceedings template: OZCHI proceedings template. OzCHI 2012 will use the EasyChair conference paper management system.

OzCHI

Theme: Design-Interaction-Participation

OZCHI is Australia’s leading forum for research on the design and study of
Human-Computer Interaction and CHISIG’s (www.chisig.org) annual
non-profit conference. OZCHI attracts an international community of
practitioners, researchers, academics and students.

The 2010 conference theme is Design Interaction Participation. It
reflects the challenges of designing human interaction with and through
digital technologies in ways that support diverse participation.

SHORT PAPERS
Short papers, 4 pages in length, provide the opportunity to describe new
work or work that is still in progress that could benefit from discussion
with members of the HCI community. They may include experiences of
reflective practitioners, preliminary work, work in progress and first
drafts of novel concepts and approaches. Short papers will be subject to a
double blind review process by at least three peer reviewers and evaluated
on the basis of their significance, originality, and clarity of writing.
This review will be based on the full text of the submitted paper. Short and
long papers will be included in the USB proceedings and archived in the ACM
digital library.

The long and short papers accepted in the conference will be archived and
accessible in the ACM Digital Library.

OzCHI in Brisbane is followed by The 11th Participatory Design Conference,
PDC 2010 in Sydney. November 29 – December 3, 2010 www.pdc2010.org

STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE
Like last year, OZCHI will be preceded by a student design challenge,
where teams of 2-5 students are invited to submit a solution for a
given HCI research problem. For information about last year’s design
challenge visit http://ozchi-design.org/. For updates follow

OZCHI and SIGGRAPH ASIA

Natural swimming pool, Litchfield National Park, Darwin

The OZCHI conference featured keynotes from Paul Dourish, Gary Marsden and Fiona Ingram (Sensis Australia) but I only had time for a talk by Dourish before rushing off to SIGGRAPH ASIA in Singapore.

At OZCHI Truna, David, Marlyn and I hosted a workshop on designing digital aids for engagement in natural places.

We would have to get feedback from the 9 participants to be sure, but I thought it went really well, and now I know a little more about workshops I would love to host one again, in fact I may even suggest one to as demo for archimuse in Indiana. Paul Dourish seems to be moving towards the cultural implications of CHI and yet I think to myself his notion of culture seems rather vague but then I missed the first 30 minutes of the talk (for once, not my fault!)

Cairns and Palm Cove (where we were staying) is picturesque, had a great time diving on the great barrier reef, and in Singapore there were many people offering to show me around so I will have to think of ways to repay them.

After Singapore Eric Fassbender took me on a tour of walks and swims in Darwin (Litchfield National Park) and if Litchfield is anything to go by, Kakadu must be spectacular. Saw quite a bit of the wildlife and even some oddly toothed locals. And the fresh food Saturday market (Parap) was awesome.

Darwin also has a brand new conference venue facility on the marina (with seafood restaurants on the jetty nearby) but sorry my camera was full!
