Call For Papers – SIGraDi 2012

The XVI SIGraDi Conference will take place in Fortaleza, Brazil, between November 14th and 16th 2012, focusing the debates on the theme form[in]formation. The challenges and efforts of our times are related to information. They deal with the progressive processes in which data is organized, and how this information can be communicated in various shapes and perceived as knowledge. Contemporary processes of design and production of the object, architecture and the city, require the digital manipulation of information. This manipulation allowed the resurgence of design processes based on emerging shapes, using algorithms and grammar; it is this digital progress that allows for the information management of BIM and other protocols of collaborative tasks; it also allows the idea formation in virtual realities, or even incorporated by the matter itself, through CAD-CAM technologies.

It is this process of formation, this continuos flux of reducing entropy, that comprises our matter. It is acknowledging this flux that we propose the XVI SIGRaDi Conference: the investigation of the processes of form[in]formation.

The sub themes for SIGraDi 2012 are related to the new procedures, media and practices of urban and architectonic design, the diverse manifestations of art, and design. The abstract submission should consider this multiplicity, choosing the topic that best suits the approach or envision of the work, according to the following tracks:

  • Poetics of design
  • Information modeling and Simulation
  • Information design and interface
  • Design Process
  • Collaborative environment as a support for design
  • New production systems
  • Teaching strategies and curriculum

Schedule and abstracts

We invite you to submit abstracts with a maximum of 600 words until April 15th 2012. Abstracts may be written in Spanish, Portuguese or English. You must also indicate your work interest area, approach and category. You can add five (5) keywords and a synthesis image.

Abstracts will be reviewed and evaluated through a blind peer review process by an International Scientific Committee. Criteria for acceptance are relevance, originality, premises, level of development and clarity of presentation.

The notification of acceptance is expected before July 15th 2012, and the full papers can be submitted until September 15th 2012.

DIGITAL PHYSICALITY | PHYSICAL DIGITALITY SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

Digitality is the condition of living in a world where ubiquitous information and communication technology is embedded in the physical world. Although it is possible to point out what is “digital” and what is “real,” the distinction has become pointless, and it has no more explanatory power for our environment, buildings, and behaviour. Material objects are invested with communication means, teams are communicating even when not together, and buildings can sense and respond to the environment, each other, and to inhabitants.

Digital is no longer an add-on, extra, or separate software. Reality is partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and we need to investigate its potential. We have to search for new strategies that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to artifacts or what we design, but it also influences the process, methods, and what or how we teach. For the conference therefore, we are looking for contributions that explore this synergy.

Authors are encouraged to submit their work on the conference theme.

Subjects may be, but are not limited to: CAAD curriculum. Modes of production. New design concepts and strategies. Mass customization. Collaborative design. Digital aids to design creativity. User participation in design. Generative design. Virtual architecture. Shape studies. Virtual reality. Precedence and prototypes. Web-based design. Design tool development. Human-Computer Interaction. Simulation, prediction, and evaluation. City modelling. Digital applications in construction.

IJAC | International Journal of Architectural Computing*
We invite authors to submit original research papers for the issue scheduled for May/June 2012, under the title

Augmented Culture**
Gabriela Celani and Eduardo Nardelli
Guest editors
Deadline January 15th, 2012

Augmented Culture talks about a combination of interdependent social and technological meanings in a complex, multiple, interactive and interconnected context. It acknowledges that a new social and cultural paradigm is being developed as the old barriers of time, space and language are ruptured and transcended. In our knowledge-based civilization, we inhabit interconnected societies where new relational forms are configured. Additionally, cultural expressions have been qualitatively augmented starting from their integration with information and communication technologies, which have dramatically enhanced not only their creative and reflective processes, but also the realization and construction of cultural objects.

In this sense, an Augmented Culture compels us to investigate the wide and complex spectrum of the variables that express the interdisciplinary, collective and participative constructions of our present age, so strongly related to visual culture, information culture and interface culture. Thus, we consider it necessary to concentrate, to expand, to spread and to share exploratory, descriptive or explanatory experiences and productions of such phenomena. The attempt is to define a multidimensional theoretical framework that while recognizing today’s state-of-the-art and tendencies, providing us with a critical viewpoint.

Authors are invited to submit complete and original papers that have not been published elsewhere and are not currently under consideration for another journal. The submissions should be full-length papers (3000 – 5000 words, maximum length 6000 words) complete with illustrations reporting original research or practice.

Papers must be submitted only by the IJAC online system at http://www.architecturalcomputing.org/review/author/submit.php Please type “Augmented Culture” in the “Optional Comments” box in the form.

August visit to Scandinavia via Singapore itinerary

I am landing in the Nordic region to finish a book project on organic design theories in early modern Nordic Architecture (Aalto, Asplund, Lewerentz, Fehn, Utzon and also some less well known architects like Kampmann and Knutsen). The main writing is based on a 90,000 word thesis, (plus a 30,000 word subthesis on pastmodern architecture), but I need to update the references, develop a more critical and philosophical approach, and take a great many photos! Rough itinerary so far is below.

New paper on Biofeedback and Architecture to be presented at CAADRIA 2011, 27-29 April

I just sent the final paper off to the organizers of CAADRIA 2011.
It is rather a rare paper by Andrew Dekker and myself  as it talks about atmosphere, 19th Century German empathy theory, Heidegger (indirectly), Wild Divine biofeedback and Zombies. Actually it is not really about Zombies but about how indirect biofeedback could be used for architectural visualization, social worlds and virtual places in general. I was trying to make the case for indirect biofeedback to augment the environment, and to allow enhanced information or interaction based on mastering/achieving calm, rather than on raising excitement levels. It is a step in my attempt to convey an experience of holy places and cultural sites using (indirect) biofeedback. Biofeedback has been seen as highly subjective, variable, and unreliable as a direct interaction method which is one of the reasons I am so interested it as indirect and augmenting rather than direct and dominant. Anyway, the abstract follows:

INDIRECT BIOFED ARCHITECTURE
Strategies to best utilise biofeedback tools and interaction metaphors within digital architectural environments

This paper explains potential benefits of indirect biofeed-back used within interactive virtual environments, and reflects on an earlier study that allowed for the dynamic modification of a virtual environment’s graphic shaders, music and artificial intelligence (of Non Playing Characters) based on the biofeedback of the player. It then examines both the potential and the issues in applying biofeed-back (already effective for games) to digital architectural environ-ments, and suggests potential uses such as personalization, object creation, atmospheric augmentation, filtering, and tracking.

cfp: DMACH 2011 Digital Media and its Applications in Cultural Heritage

Organized by The Center for the Study of Architecture in the Arab Region, Jordan Al-Turath Foundation, Saudi Arabia

In collaboration with Queen Rania Institute of Tourism and Heritage, Hashemite University

16-17 March, 2011 Amman -Jordan

Over the past few years, a remarkable increase has occurred in the use of digital techniques for the documentation, management, and communication of cultural heritage. This has drastically transformed the way we capture, store, process, represent and disseminate information. The techniques employed have evolved from standard surveying and CAD tools and/or traditional photogrammetry into laser scanning virtual reality and fully automated video-based techniques. However, it is often argued that digital media tend to create and compile value-free content and thus are inefficient in capturing and communicating cultural and symbolic meanings. Digital media, as any other medium, tend to amplify or reduce the cultural phenomena as a result of their constraints and limitations. Thus the issue of using digital media for cultu

The Villa Adriana (at Tivoli, near Rome) is an exceptional complex of classical buildings created in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian. It combines the best elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome in the form of an ‘ideal city’.
