BBC News – Carbon nanotubes used to make batteries from fabrics

Carbon nanotubes used to make batteries from fabrics

The nanotubes stay put and function even when the fabric is stretched

Ordinary cotton and polyester fabrics have been turned into batteries that retain their flexibility.

The demonstration is a boost to the nascent field of “wearable electronics” in which devices are integrated into clothing and textiles.

The approach is based on dipping fabrics in an “ink” of tiny tubes of carbon, and was first demonstrated last year on plain copier paper.

The new application to fabrics is reported in the journal Nano Letters.

“Wearable electronics represent a developing new class of materials… which allow for many applications and designs previously impossible with traditional electronics technologies,” the authors wrote.

A number of research efforts in recent years have shown the possibility of electronics that can be built on flexible and even transparent surfaces – leading to the often-touted “roll-up display”.

Bladerunner and counterculture champions

David Pogue in the NY Times on the “Android Army” writes about criticism of his review of Nexus:

The most plausible theory, though, is that Google’s Android phone software is a more open and hackable operating system than the proprietary software on the iPhone, BlackBerry or Palm. Therefore, Android appeals to precisely the sort of frustrated, anti-establishment people who have no trouble writing abusive notes. It brings them out of the woodwork, gives them a new counterculture champion.

My new phrase for today. Ironically, I noticed even P K Dick’s family is suing google over the Android and Nexus terms!

Visiting the USA just got even more irksome

Here we need to visit the Embassy, be screened, pay a visa fee, leave them our passport several weeks, and now we have these extra conditions including I think a 3 hour check in and A5 NOT A4 carry on bags (which means no onboard laptops!):

At the direction of United States Government, additional security measures have now been implemented for travel from New Zealand to the United States of America.Ā  Passengers are advised to check with Air New Zealand at least 24 hours prior to their flight on any changes to the security requirements and adjust their travel plans accordingly.

Passengers travelling to the United States are now required to undergo a secondary security screening at the aircraft gate lounge.Ā  Passengers are requested to ensure they are at the boarding gate as early as possible to assist with the following required security procedures:

•Security Screening Personnel will perform a physical pat-down of all passengers

•All carry-on luggage and accessible items will be physically searched, prior to boarding the aircraft.Ā  Air New Zealand request passengers limit carry-on items and only take items that may be needed for use in flight in their check in luggage and place all other items into their checked-in luggage.

•All Liquids, Aerosols and Gels must be placed in one (1) litre transparent re-sealable plastic bag and presented at the screening point. The maximum container size is 100mls (100 grams), and all 100ml containers presented for inspection must fit comfortably within a one (1) litre transparent re-sealable plastic bag.

•Retain all receipts of purchased ā€˜Duty Free’ items, and ensure that they are readily available for presentation to the Security Screeners.

•If water or other drinks are purchased for the flight, do not open the bottles or containers until after secondary security screening at the gate.Ā  Any containers that have been opened or where the caps have been tampered with will not be permitted on board the aircraft.

•Medical supplies, such as syringes etc, will require a medical certificate when carried as hand luggage, and should be readily available for presentation to Security Screeners.

•Once on board the aircraft passengers must remain in their assigned seats, and comply with the directions of the crew.

the origins of archaeology as non-western profession

Nabodinus, Last Great King of Babylon – Archaeology Expert (UK)

As a “science” however it can be traced back to Sir William Stukeleyhttp://heritage-key.com/world/worlds-first-archaeologists-and-their-role-defining-history

I still wonder if the Roman emperor Hadrian could be considered a revivalist architect or archaeologist.
http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/907

The Villa Adriana (at Tivoli, near Rome) is an exceptional complex of classical buildings created in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian. It combines the best elements of the architectural heritage of Egypt, Greece and Rome in the form of an ‘ideal city’.

the new google phone?

according to reports, scratch that, gossip, google will release their own phone start of 2010. And from what I have read between the lines, it will be a vast improvement over current Android phones.

A vast improvement for me would be:

-native and tested SDK for 2D and 3D interactive content (runs Unity 3D and Blender and Flash)

-a keyboard peripheral (portable, possible can fold), that can be attached for serious typing

-accelerometer and GPS (even if add-on or upgrade)

-microphone support

-a good camera or a replaceable / updateable camera (can any phone do this-why not?)

-decent battery settings for maximum battery life

-can hook up directly to external monitor and run that monitor at full display settings (the impossible dream).

cross-cultural interactions in virtual worlds

I was emailed some questions out of the blue by a student on the Worldplay Research initiative project. One question of particular interest to me that I should be able to answer (but cannot, just yet), was how games are designed for different cultures.

Apart from my wondering if perhaps their project should be called Worlds play rather than worldplay, and my wondering if I should have mentioned my discussions with psychologists on worlds and worldfulness in relation to mental health, there are some important and interesting questions in their project.

ICTVC2010: 4th Intl Conf on Typography and Visual Communication (June, Cyprus)

On 17, 18 & 19 June 2010 the Department of Design & Multimedia of the University of Nicosia will be hosting the 4th International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication (ICTVC) with the general theme ā€œLending Grace to Languageā€.

After three important and successful international meetings (2002, 2004, 2007 /http://www.ictvc.org/) ICTVC moves to Cyprus. Our new home sits at the crossroads of three continents, a location of historical significance that far outweighs its small size. The multicultural character of the island makes Cyprus a perfect location for a conference that explores the world of typographic design and visual language. The Organizing Committee members invite you to contribute your proposals for a presentation or panel discussion for inclusion in the programme of the 4th ICTVC. Abstracts of no more than 200 words and a short bio of 70-100 words, either in Greek or English, should be submitted by 10 January 2010. Conference presentations should be up to 30 minutes.

This time ICTVC is organized in collaboration with the Mass Media and Communication Institute (IMME), Cyprus, and AlterVision, Greece, and is supported by the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK), the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), the Institute of Paper, Printing & Publishing (IP3, UK), the Greek Graphic Designers Association (EGE) and the Thessaloniki Design Museum. ICTVC is endorsed by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA).
