CFP: IAMHIST conference: Media History and Cultural Memory – Denmark

http://hsozkult.geschichte.hu-berlin.de/termine/id=14974

Veranstalter:International Association for Media and History (IAMHIST), University of Copenhagen, The Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television
Datum, Ort:06.07.2011-09.07.2011, Copenhagen (Denmark)
Deadline:01.12.2010

The International Association for Media and History (IAMHIST) is pleased to announce its XXIV biennial conference, on the theme of Media History and Cultural Memory, to be held at Copenhagen University Wednesday, July 6- Saturday, July 9, 2011.

The conference will look at the ways in which media history is interwoven with the concept of cultural memory. Media such as radio, television, film, and the internet are used to create, represent, transmit, revise, and preserve collective constructions of history and identity. Media hold complex and evolving roles in the ways that individuals and groups understand the moments and events of their pasts, at all levels of social organization (local, regional, national, transnational). These understandings inform policy, politics, and the performance of identity, laying the foundation for future interpretations and understandings, and carrying past and present affiliations, conflicts, glory, and trauma forward in time.

Proposals and inquiries should be directed to Karsten Fledelius at
iamhist2011@gmail.com.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2010.

Become your own Avatar and navigate through the fascinating virtual gallery Virtual Impressions in Second Life.
Created in partnership with Charles Darwin University’s Northern Editions and the School of Creative Arts and Humanities for the Darwin Festival, this unique on-line platform enables visitors to view the centuries-old art form of printmaking with the new virtual environment.
This interactive gallery experience is linked to a CDU research project in new media technologies, ‘Virtual Galleries’, and provides alternative ways to view, consider and discuss fine art.
It showcases the best of the freshly released limited edition prints that have been produced at Northern Editions and replicates on-line the two physical exhibitions at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina Campus, Tiwi Shima and Nexus.
Darwin Festival goers and arts lovers from around the globe are invited to explore all three Northern Editions’ exhibitions, both physically and virtually, interact on-line with the curator and chat with other virtual visitors.
The opening event will also include a ‘live stream’ of our physical art gallery with a user-controlled Internet camera so that the users can take control of the camera and pan, tilt and zoom to the artworks that they are interested in. cfp:Design Ed Asia

http://www.sd.polyu.edu.hk/designedconference2010/index.php

Design Education has the chance to preserve world cultures, and the skills of those cultures, through digital, fashion, graphic, interior and product design. In some regions of the world, it may be one of the only ways to preserve the visible language of a culture. Do you have an important story to tell about design and culture? Are the artifacts your students design steeped in the culture of their region or are they made for a nondescript global market? Please share your insights with us at DesignEd Asia.

We invite papers in the following topic areas:

  • Successful cultural content integration into the curriculum
  • Regional cultural design projects
  • Sustainability and cultural designs
  • Entrepreneurial local cultural designs
  • Designing for other cultures
  • or a topic of your choice that relates to design education

CFP: History and heritage in games and virtual worlds: Special Issue of Games and Culture

Title: History and heritage in games and virtual worlds: Special Issue of Games and Culture (SAGE).

The virtual worlds of modern games provide a unique way for us to interact with our memories, interpretations, beliefs, and traditions. This can be the digital simulation and interpretation cultural heritage in the real world, or the equally real social legacies of online communities. We invite you to tackle the complex issues of making these histories come alive in this special issue of Games and Culture.

Submissions can include (but are not limited to):
• Critiques of games and online worlds that involve historical situations or heritage sites.
• Guidelines and arguments as to the design and experience of games and virtual worlds for history and heritage
• Interviews (both physical-world and in-world) with designers of the above games and virtual worlds.
• Critiques or evaluations of sandbox games and virtual environments regarding history and heritage.
• Reports on accidental or planned historical or cultural events, artifacts and rituals that take place in games and virtual worlds.
• Explorations on how to best utilize the unique interactive, technical and psychological aspects of games and virtual worlds for the purpose of historical or heritage-based learning.

This special issue of Games and Culture has two overarching goals:

• To provide case studies involving the design, use and evaluation of history and heritage-based games and virtual worlds.
• To outline the key theoretical debates pertaining to the issues raised by the design, use and evaluation of these games and virtual worlds.
Authors are encouraged to include a critical perspective, including discussions of the strengths and weaknesses of their own methods.

CAADRIA 2011 Call for Papers – Abstracts Due September 1, 2010

Contemporary advances in design are shaped by computational design methods, strategies and technologies, regardless of whether these advances are manifested in the design and construction of a building, in related theory and analysis, or in the ways in which future designers and scholars are educated. Architectural computation in the post-digital era calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. “Circuit Bending, Breaking and Mending” provides an interdisciplinary context for challenging traditional paradigms and invites researchers and practitioners alike to (re)consider and (re)address design and computation with a particular focus on three themes:
Innovative design conceptualisation and support through computational theories and technologies.
Enhanced knowledge of architecture and design through computational analysis.
Improved approaches to design education through computational thinking and applications.

Young researchers currently involved in postgraduate studies are invited to submit their work-in-progress research papers to the CAADRIA 2011 Postgraduate Student Consortium.
