cfp: Transmedia storytelling: London, Monday, 17 June

http://ica2013transmedia.wordpress.com/about/

The objective of this preconference is to create an interdisciplinary environment for exchanging research experiences on transmedia storytelling. 21st century media convergence processes – that could be interpreted not only as a concentration of media ownership but as a complex series of operations that involve technological, professional, and cultural aspects – have completely changed the traditional communication landscape. In this context, many contemporary media productions are characterized by: 1) the expansion of their narrative through different media (film, TV, comics, etc.) and platforms (blogs, YouTube, etc.), and 2) the creation of user-generated contents that contribute to expanding the original story. In 2003 Henry Jenkins defined such productions as transmedia storytelling. In this preconference we place transmedia storytelling at the centre of a scientific exchange environment.

Transmedia storytelling is one of the main strategies of media companies, and a significant practice for the consumers that cooperate in the expansion of a narrative. On the other side, transmedia storytelling is an interdisciplinary research object that can be studied under different approaches: Media Studies, Political Economy, Media Economics, Narratology, Ludology, Film Studies, Semiotics, Ethnography, etc. International research on TS is expanding but it is still a fragmented field. In this context the objectives of the preconference are:

  • To discuss the state of transmedia research in the world
  • To present, diffuse and discuss the cutting edge studies on transmedia around the world.
  • To offer an interdisciplinary environment for exchanging methodologies, approaches to and experiences in transmedia research
  • To consolidate an international network of transmedia researchers.

The creation of exchange environments like this preconference will facilitate interactions between scholars and consolidate the research of one of the most important experiences of contemporary media.

This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in exploring transmedia storytelling. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that transmedia experiences pose not only for the audiences but for those doing research on media economy, media narratives or media anthropology. The one-day preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, one keynote panel, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. The preconference is open to anyone who is interested in transmedia storytelling.

VAST2012: The 13th International Symposium on Virtual Reality, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Brighton, UK, 19-21 November 2012
Use inspired technological advances in heritage
www.vast2012.org
DEADLINE: 23 SEPTEMBER, 2012

Digital technology has the potential to influence every aspect of the cultural heritage environment. Archaeologists and cultural heritage scientists as well as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts have in the past collaborated to find solutions to optimise all aspects of capturing, managing, analysing and delivering cultural information, but many unsolved problems remain. The goal of VAST 2012 will be to build on the open dialogue between these different areas of expertise, and in particular allow ICT experts to have a better understanding of the critical requirements that cultural heritage professionals have for managing and delivering cultural information and for the ICT systems that support these activities.

To achieve this VAST 2012 will explore the entire pipeline of ICT in cultural heritage from background research to exploitation. The conference not only focuses on the development of innovative solutions, but it will investigate the issues of the exploitation of computer science research by the cultural heritage community. The transition from research to practical reality can be fraught with difficulty. The digital environment provides new opportunities and new business processes for sustainability, but with these opportunities there are also challenges. VAST 2012 will provide an opportunity for the heritage and ICT communities to understand these challenges and shape the future of ICT and heritage research. We are seeking contributions that advance the state of the art in the information technologies available to support cultural heritage. In particular:

Data Acquisition and Processing:
2/3/4D data capture

Impact of ICT applications in cultural heritage

Other relevant works concerning the application of information technologies to Cultural Heritage, not explicitly included in the above categories, are also welcome for submission. Accepted papers will be presented in the form of:

· Full research papers presenting new innovative results: these papers will be published by Eurographics in the EG Symposium Series (ISSN 1881-864X). The contributions should not exceed 8 pages, including bibliography and illustrations.
· Short papers presenting preliminary results and works-in-progress or focusing on on-going projects, the description of project organization, use of technology, and lesson learned. These papers will have an oral and poster presentation and will be published in the “Projects & Short Papers” proceedings volume. The contributions should not exceed 4 pages, including bibliography and illustrations.

BEST PAPERS AWARD The best papers selected at VAST 2012 will have the opportunity to be submitted to the ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage (JOCCH). JOCCH is published online during the year and then a hardcopy volume is produced at the end of the year.
All submissions will be reviewed and feedback given to the authors. See detailed information on submissions (http://www.vast2012.org/submissions). To have the paper published in the proceedings, at least one of the authors must register to the Conference after being notified of acceptance but before submitting camera-ready copies.

Call for Papers for Liverpool TAG 2012

Call for Papers for Liverpool TAG 2012.

Call for Papers for a TAG session, proposed by Don Henson, Director, Centre for Audio Visual Study and Practice in Archaeology (CASPAR), Dr Monty Dobson, archaeologist, filmaker and TV presenter, Drury University, and Lorna Richardson, PhD Candidate, UCL Centre for Digital Humanities

Session title: Archaeology & Media – Entertainment or Edutainment?

This proposed session will explore both the educational and entertainment value of archaeological information in the media, from traditional television programming, archaeology on the Internet, online broadcasting, and the radio.

This session will ask what value does archaeology hold for the media? How has archaeology been presented to a media-hungry public to date, and what future does it have in the digital age? Does archaeology have brand-awareness? Should rigorous archaeological scholarship take a backseat to popular entertainment, and how can archaeological programming and information online provide narrative and information that is both entertaining and factual?

Papers are invited that discuss how archaeological sites and images are reused in popular culture; the longtail of archaeological edutainment; popular respresentations of archaeologists and archaeology in the media; is there an archaeological stereotype that we play to?; the importance of the presenter as the face of archaeology on television; how does media commissioning works with archaeological information and how do archaeologists work with the media?; how and why is archaeological information subverted, changed or ‘sexed up’ to pull in audiences?; should archaeologists share archaeological authority through media?; pseudoarchaeology as popular TV entertainment.  Other related topics are welcome.

Submission deadlines for proposed papers is Friday 22nd June 2012.

For further information, or to submit a paper proposal, please contact Don Henson or  Lorna Richardson

cfp: Conference Images and Visualisation: Imaging Technology, Truth and Trust

ESF-LiU conference, 17-21 September 2012 Norrköping, Sweden

Deadline for applications: 06 June 2012

Both Leonardo da Vinci and John Constable claimed that painting is a science. This science has been explored extensively in traditional aesthetics and art history. Given recent advances in science and visual engineering, creating images for science, of science and for the translation (interpretation) of science has become at one and the same time commonplace, even easy, and even more scientific. To understand the social, ethical and aesthetic challenges posed by the creation, use and appeal of such images, we need more than traditional art historyand more than insights from traditional aesthetics. We need to understand these images in the context of modern science, technology and society and we need ways of engaging those who produce them (scientists, engineers, artists, photographers, journalists, advertisers) with those who study them and those who use them. The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts from across the sciences, both natural and social, with curators, artists, producers and users of images based on advanced visual engineering. By exploring emerging challenges at the interface between advanced visualisation technologies, truth and trust we want to stimulate talk, interaction and collaboration between the arts, humanities and (natural, medical, engineering, computer) sciences and most importantly between these sciences, in a context where both science and (visual) art and the various sciences themselves are increasingly converging, but where, at the same time, disciplinary boundaries still separate those working across them.

CFP: 6th European Conference on Games Based Learning (ECGBL-2012)

Final call for papers for this Conference being held at The River Lee Hotel, Cork, Ireland on the 4-5 October 2012. This call is open until 16th of March 2012. Further details can be found at: http://academic-conferences.org/ecgbl/ecgbl2012/ecgbl12-call-papers.htm

Over the last ten years, the way in which education and training is delivered has changed considerably with the advent of new technologies. One such new technology that holds considerable promise for helping to engage learners is Games-Based Learning (GBL). The Conference offers an opportunity for scholars and practitioners interested in the issues related to GBL to share their thinking and research findings. Papers can cover various issues and aspects of GBL in education and training: technology and implementation issues associated with the development of GBL; use of mobile and MMOGs for learning; pedagogical issues associated with GBL; social and ethical issues in GBL; GBL best cases and practices, and other related aspects. We are particularly interested in empirical research that addresses whether GBL enhances learning. This Conference provides a forum for discussion, collaboration and intellectual exchange for all those interested in any of these fields of research or practice.

The conference committee welcomes contributions on a wide range of topics using a range of scholarly approaches including theoretical and empirical papers employing qualitative, quantitative and critical methods. Action research, case studies and work-in-progress/posters are welcomed approaches. PhD Research, proposals for roundtable discussions, non-academic contributions and product demonstrations based on the main themes are also invited.

CFP: International Symposium on Cooperative Design and Visualization, CDV2012, IEEE

CDV2012 is part of the 16th International Conference on Information Visualisation (IV2012), 10-13 July 2012, LIRMM/CNRS University of Montpellier 2, France.

Submission details here.

The rapidly growing amount, availability and complexity of information pose great chances for a more holistic understanding of yet undiscovered interdependencies within systems and disciplines. Recent developments show that areas such as economics and trading, legislation, planning and design need new techniques for assessments and risk management. Quite often it is hard to predict and to communicate what effects certain sanctions will have – or even why they are particularly selected as a part of an action plan. The importance to clearly visualize and communicate system effects present an incontestable value – especially if combined with instant and interactive techniques, which stimulate a fruitful exchange between disciplines. Interdisciplinary questions drive evermore cooperation and analytical work in teams. Since each discipline provides its personal visual and textual languages these barriers have to be overcome when it comes to true cooperation. Enhanced – while still being generic – techniques for supporting and managing cooperative processes need to be found.
